Adopt new technology and the sky’s the limit

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but witnessing a well seasoned engineer using an additive manufacturing (AM) machine create a part impossible to make by other manufacturing process with 25 micron accuracy, was a sight to behold.  The SME business I visited a few months ago had just purchased it’s fifth AM machine and has plans to purchase more.  Thankfully the owner is willing to invest in the latest & greatest technology, and they are reaping the benefits.  The business is expanding at double digit growth per annum and is recruiting both apprentices & experienced engineers as it develops business into a number of new markets.

I also had the pleasure to visit a robotics manufacturer this year, again a growing business and very refreshing to here of the demand from all types of industry for automation.  The area that was most interesting was the ‘Cobot’ or Collaborative Robot.  This is a type of robot that can literally operate safely in the same area as an engineer.  Robots have been around and used in industry for over 60 years but have always had to operate within an environment cocooned away from people.  Cobot technology allows a robotic arm to operate in the same environment and is able to be easily taught to do all different types of operations.  They are not just used in manufacturing but in quality, testing, laboratory work and electronics.  The robotics business said not a week goes by when they find new potential applications.

These are just two examples of the way a number of manufacturing organisations are adopting new technology to make improvements to productivity, capacity, quality, cost & delivery timescales.  The SMA can help advise and sign post on new technology to its members and those wishing to join, having great industry contacts.  The SMA also hold industry events to highlight and showcase new technology for it’s members enabling direct access to experts and organisations who are working at the cutting edge.

You might be an old dog or a young pup but embracing new technology is something that most engineers would welcome, who doesn’t want a new toy to play with!  Let’s ensure that we make sure those who hold the purse strings are continually reminded of the industry 4.0 technology which is available and continues to be developed.  The multiple benefits and competitive advance they bring will help any business get and keep ahead.
